ION EXCHANGE SYSTEMS

Ion-exchange systems are typically installed where volume is less than three gallons of fixer per day or where volume can be erratic. They can be used with virtually no maintenance and as long as the volume doesn't get too high, an ion-exchange system will keep most systems in compliance. Their main disadvantage is that the ion-exchange cores have to be replaced every time silver is harvested and the cost of the cores is recovered from somewhere. However on low-volume processors this is often a good choice.

ELECTROLYTIC SYSTEMS

picture of clean and dirty cores or somethingElectrolytic systems are typically installed where volume is 2 or more gallons of fixer a day with steady usage. They require electrical connection and are a little more maintenance intensive than an ion-exchange system. However, electrolytic systems typically yield more silver for the same volume. There is no core to replace and the amount of silver present can be verified by weighing the silver flake recovered. Electrolytic systems are the most cost efficient systems and are used by HEAVYWEIGHT ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES.
